What is Person-Centred Therapy?

Person-centred therapy, developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940s, is a humanistic approach that highlights your unique self and your natural capacity for personal growth. The core belief of person-centred therapy is that you have the power within yourself to find solutions to your challenges, given a supportive and non-judgemental therapeutic relationship.

As your counsellor, my aim is to create a safe and empathetic environment where you can explore your feelings, thoughts, and experiences without fear of criticism. I strive to help you develop self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-understanding, leading to healthier relationships and enhanced overall well-being.

Combining Person-Centred Therapy with Psychological Theory

Person-centred therapy emphasises empathy, acceptance, connection, and authenticity to create a safe space for you to explore your inner world. When this approach is enriched with psychological knowledge, such as cognitive-behavioural techniques or attachment theory, interventions can be tailored to meet your unique needs. This combination offers a holistic and effective therapeutic experience, fully addressing your emotional well-being.

My Approach

About me

I studied as a mature student at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. Graduating with a BSc in Psychology & Counselling, and an MSc in Counselling & Psychotherapy, I gained my experience by working as a person-centred therapist at the University of Glasgow’s Counselling & Psychological Services department. I also provided listening services to staff and patient’s families during my undergraduate degree within the acute services at Glasgow Royal Infirmary during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Having lived, and worked, in Cumbria within North-West England for several years, it was during that time I found myself in need of counselling to help navigate through some difficult life changes. As a client of person-centred therapy, I found the space and support to explore my past and discover my authentic self. I found the clarity and courage necessary to make positive changes within my life and to take a new direction.
